On Friday Ting and I ran our first workshop looking at community narrative and union banners. The workshop ran from 1.30-4 and we had 5 first year participants. We had devised several story and drawing games to generate ideas and slogans before working together to create a union style banner that represents Interactive Arts.
We wanted to work with the first years to give ourselves a chance to try out ideas and experiment without worrying too much. It was great to have a chance to actually try out the ideas we have been working on and we discovered several things we will be developing for next time. However we are aware that this will most likely be one of our easiest sessions - the participants know us and each other and are comfortable working the way we were asking them to. It was also different from future workshops as we are a part of the Interactive Arts community, and this won't be the case with any future workshops.
Our participants decided that they wanted to create a banner than represented the whole of Interactive Arts - inspired by one of the drawing dice questions, they decided they wanted every person on the course (plus tutors) to draw a small self portrait onto the canvas.*
*we have since received feedback that some members of the course found it difficult to draw on a portrait as they hadn't been a part of the task and so were unsure and felt intrusive/put on the spot.
